Springfield, IL – Yesterday at the Illinois State Capitol, State Representative Travis Weaver (R-Edwards) stood strong for homeschool freedoms alongside his colleagues, State Representatives Regan Deering (R-Decatur) and Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville). Rep. Weaver discussed the importance of homeschooling and welcomed homeschooled students who spent the day advocating for their future throughout the capitol.
Despite the popularity of homeschooling in Illinois, House Democrats are backing intrusive changes to it through a piece of legislation, HB 2827. The measure would create new regulations and open the potential for more mandates down the road—making it increasingly more difficult for homeschooling to have a successful future in the state. For Rep. Weaver, HB2827 is another example of government overreach and an overzealous attempt to create a solution to a problem that does not exist.
“Today’s showing in the Capitol proved just how important homeschooling is to families in Illinois,” said Rep. Weaver. “I heard firsthand from families, including the students standing beside me today, about the benefits of their schooling experience, and it goes far beyond the homemade cherry pie they delivered today. Homeschooling is a freedom that must be protected for the sake of thousands in our state.”
