Established in the early-1860’s, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for bravery and courage on the battlefield, awarded to every service member who “distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”
To date, there have been 3,547 Medals awarded, with 19 double recipients, and 61 recipients who are still living.
Today, on National Medal of Honor Day, as well as every day, we remember and honor the valor and sacrifice each soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman displayed and made to earn this incredible distinction.
